Hoshiarpur
Hoshiarpur, a city as well as a municipal council, is located in the Hoshiarpur District in Punjab. According to historians, the city was founded in early fourth century. Hoshiarpur boasts of a rich ancient history. The recent discoveries of Stone Age artifacts have proved that the region around the foothills of the Shivalik was inhabited by the ancient Paleolithic man. Archeological excavations and the remnants of the temples at Dholbaha have linked the area’s relics to the Pleistocene age. The fossils and the unique sandstone sculptures found in the area belong to the medieval period.
Historians opine that the present Hoshiarpur plains were ruled by the Mohammedans after Jalandhar fell in 1088 AD. But, the Hindu Chieftains continued to rule the hills. Later, the entire Shivalik Hill region was conquered by Sultan Muhammad Ghori. When Aamir Taimur was returning from Delhi in 1398-99 AD, the Hoshiarpur region was devastated by Taimur’s attempts to conquer Nagarkot. He, however, could not subjugate the Hindu Rajas.
In the Mughal era, in 1707, after Aurangzeb’s demise, Punjab got divided into half a dozen Doabs among which the Jalandhar Doab consisted of sixty-nine mahals. The most significant towns of the Jalandhar Doab were Hoshiarpur, Tanda, Mukerjan and Sham Churasi, all located within the Hoshiarpur District. In 1809, the area was conquered by the army of Maharaja Karanvir Singh and was integrated under the greater State of Punjab. When the 1st Anglo-Sikh War came to an end, the district of Hoshiarpur was conquered by the British. The region was administered by John Lawrence, the first Commissioner of the area, from March 1846 to 1848. It is said that unrest in the Hoshiarpur area led to the British forces being put on alert during the First Indian War of Independence in 1857.
During the struggle for Independence, a political storm rose in most of the districts including Hoshiarpur against the British Rule. With the objective of making Punjab politically active, District Congress Committees were established in each district .The Committee at Hoshiarpur was set up in 1917. In the same year, delegates of the Committee participated in the Provincial Political Conference organized at Lahore. On July 23, 1920, the Hoshiarpur District Congress Committee held a public meeting at the Hoshiarpur City supporting the Non-Cooperation Movement. Thus, Hoshiarpur remained politically alive during India’s struggle for independence.
Presently, people from all over North India travel to Hoshiarpur to avail of the numerous educational opportunities. Hoshiarpur, with its mild climate, is also a popular tourist destination today. Tourists flock to the famous Sheesh Mahal while music lovers take out time for a visit to the village of the Beju Bawra and the Kila Baroon built by Sher Shah Suri at Bajwara. Gorgeous wooden and ivory handicrafts have made Hoshiarpur popular with the foreign tourists. Visitors love to eat the various varieties of mangoes available during the summer.
