Specialties of Punjab

Ludhiana knitwear and bicycles

Ludhiana is India's main centre for woollen knitwear (hosiery): sweaters, cardigans, shawls and winter wear, made in thousands of units. It is also the country's bicycle capital, making most of India's bicycles and their parts, along with sewing machines, tools and auto parts.

Jalandhar sports goods

Jalandhar makes cricket bats and balls, hockey sticks, footballs, boxing gloves and other sports equipment, supplying teams in India and exporting worldwide. The industry grew from craftsmen who moved there from Sialkot after Partition.

Help for entrepreneurs and local industries

Every district has a District Industries Centre (DIC), run by the state's industries department. It is the first place to go to register a unit, to apply for the state's incentives and subsidies, and for help with central schemes such as PMEGP.
