Specialties of Jharkhand
Lac
Lac is a resin made by tiny insects that live on palash, ber and kusum trees. Farmers in Khunti, Ranchi, Gumla and other districts raise the insects on their trees and scrape off the lac, which is processed into shellac for varnishes, food coatings, medicines and bangles. Jharkhand is India's largest lac producer, and the ICAR National Institute of Secondary Agriculture (formerly the Indian Lac Research Institute) is at Namkum, Ranchi.
Tasar silk
Jharkhand is India's largest producer of tasar silk, made from cocoons of silkworms reared on asan and arjun trees in its forests, mostly by tribal families. The Central Silk Board's Central Tasar Research and Training Institute is at Ranchi, and tasar fabric from Jharkhand is woven into saris, stoles and furnishing cloth.
Help for entrepreneurs and local industries
Every district has a District Industries Centre (DIC), run by the state's industries department. It is the first place to go to register a unit, to apply for the state's incentives and subsidies, and for help with central schemes such as PMEGP.
