Specialties of Madhya Pradesh
Soybean
Madhya Pradesh is one of India's two largest soybean-growing states, with Maharashtra, and is often called the Soya State. The crop, sown in the monsoon on the black soils of the Malwa plateau around Indore, Ujjain and Dewas, is crushed in the state's plants into soybean oil and soya meal for animal feed. The ICAR Indian Institute of Soybean Research is in Indore.
Chanderi saris
Chanderi, a town in Ashoknagar district, has woven fine, light saris of silk and cotton for centuries. Chanderi fabric is sheer and glossy, with small gold and silver motifs (butis) and delicate borders, woven on handlooms in weavers' homes.
Help for entrepreneurs and local industries
Every district has a District Industries Centre (DIC), run by the state's industries department. It is the first place to go to register a unit, to apply for the state's incentives and subsidies, and for help with central schemes such as PMEGP.
