                        History of Dispur

Dispur  took its position as the capital of Assam in 1973.

Shillong had been the capital of Assam since 1874. When Meghalaya became a state of its own in January 1972, Shillong went to it, and in 1973 Assam's government moved to Dispur, then on the southern edge of Guwahati, as a temporary capital. The Assam Secretariat and the Assam Legislative Assembly have sat at Dispur ever since, and the town is now part of Guwahati, in Kamrup Metropolitan district.
