Assam budget and economy
Assam grows more than half of India's tea, and the tea gardens of the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys employ hundreds of thousands of workers. Rice is the main food crop, and muga and eri silk are produced in many villages.
Oil and natural gas have been produced in Upper Assam for more than a century, and Guwahati is the commercial hub of north-east India.
