About Assamese

Assamese is one of the 22 languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India and the official language of Assam. The 2011 Census counted 1.53 crore people in India whose mother tongue it is. It is written in the Assamese script, a close relative of the Bengali script. The Government of India declared it a classical language in 2024.
