Gujarat Industries

Gujarat is a leader in petroleum refining and chemicals: Jamnagar has the world's largest refining complex, and Vapi, Ankleshwar, Bharuch and Dahej have big chemical estates. Surat cuts and polishes most of the world's diamonds and weaves synthetic textiles, Ahmedabad has textiles and pharmaceuticals, and Sanand has car and electronics plants. Semiconductor factories are being built at Dholera and Sanand. Mundra and Deendayal (Kandla) are among India's busiest ports.

Specialties of Gujarat

Dairy cooperatives (Amul)

Gujarat's dairy cooperatives began in 1946 at Anand, where farmers formed the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union, now known by its brand Amul. In the "Anand pattern", village societies collect milk from their members twice a day, and district unions process it into milk, butter, cheese, ice cream and milk powder; the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation sells them across India and abroad. The National Dairy Development Board is based in Anand.

Gir Kesar mango

The Kesar mango, saffron-coloured inside and very sweet, grows around the Gir forest in Junagadh, Gir Somnath and Amreli districts of Saurashtra. It ripens from May.

Help for entrepreneurs and local industries

Every district has a District Industries Centre (DIC), run by the state's industries department. It is the first place to go to register a unit, to apply for the state's incentives and subsidies, and for help with central schemes such as PMEGP.
