Goa Industry

Goa is an important centre for pharmaceutical manufacturing, with many plants around Verna, Kundaim and Ponda. Goa Shipyard at Vasco builds ships for the Navy and Coast Guard, and Mormugao port handles iron ore and other cargo. Food processing and electronics are also present.

Specialties of Goa

Feni

Feni is Goa's own spirit, distilled from the fermented juice of cashew apples (the fruit the cashew nut hangs from) or from coconut toddy. Cashew feni is made in March to May, when the cashew apples ripen, often in small village stills.

Goa cashews

Cashew trees, brought to Goa by the Portuguese in the 16th century, now cover much of the state's hill slopes. Goa's cashew factories shell, peel and grade the nuts, and Goa cashews are known for their taste and size.

Help for entrepreneurs and local industries

Every district has a District Industries Centre (DIC), run by the state's industries department. It is the first place to go to register a unit, to apply for the state's incentives and subsidies, and for help with central schemes such as PMEGP.
