Goa Artists
For a small state, Goa has given India an extraordinary number of musicians and painters, and its own Konkani songs and theatre are alive in every village.
Classical music
Some of the greatest Hindustani singers came from Goa: Kesarbai Kerkar was born in Keri, Mogubai Kurdikar in Kurdi and Jitendra Abhisheki in Mangeshi. The Mangeshkar family takes its name from the Mangeshi temple.
Konkani songs and tiatr
Mando and dulpod songs, sung at weddings and feasts, mix Indian and Portuguese influences. Tiatr, Konkani musical theatre, has been staged for more than a century; singers such as Lorna Cordeiro and Remo Fernandes became household names.
Painting and cartoons
The painter F. N. Souza was born in Saligao and Laxman Pai in Margao. The cartoonist Mario Miranda, whose drawings of Goan village life are painted on walls across the state, lived in Loutolim.
