Festivals of Mizoram
Mizoram's festivals follow the cycle of jhum (shifting) farming, and the three Kuts, or harvest festivals, are celebrated with feasts, songs and dances. Christmas and New Year are the biggest celebrations of the year.
Chapchar Kut
Held in March, after the forest has been cleared for planting, Chapchar Kut is Mizoram's most popular festival. People in traditional dress dance the Cheraw (bamboo dance) and other folk dances in Aizawl and across the state.
Mim Kut
Mim Kut, in August or September after the maize harvest, is held in memory of family members who have died; the first crops are offered to them.
Pawl Kut
Pawl Kut, in December or January, marks the end of the harvest with feasting.
Christmas
Most Mizos are Christian, and Christmas brings church services, choir singing and community feasts. Towns are decorated with lights and stars.
