Specialties of Meghalaya

Lakadong turmeric

Lakadong, in the West Jaintia Hills, grows a deep-yellow turmeric with a very high curcumin content, the compound that gives turmeric its colour and medicinal value. The state government's Mission Lakadong helps farmers grow and process more of it.

Khasi mandarin

The Khasi mandarin, a sweet orange grown on the southern slopes of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, ripens in winter and is sold across the north-east and beyond.

Help for entrepreneurs and local industries

Every district has a District Industries Centre (DIC), run by the state's industries department. It is the first place to go to register a unit, to apply for the state's incentives and subsidies, and for help with central schemes such as PMEGP.
