Meghalaya artists
Meghalaya, and Shillong above all, is one of the music capitals of India, and its Khasi, Garo and Jaintia people keep their own songs and dances alive.
Music
Shillong has long been known for its love of rock, blues and choir music. The Shillong Chamber Choir, founded by the pianist Neil Nongkynrih, won national fame on television and has sung around the world, and the singer Lou Majaw is famous for his yearly concert for Bob Dylan's birthday. Traditional Khasi instruments include the duitara (a stringed instrument) and the ksing drum.
Dance
Shad Suk Mynsiem, the Khasi dance of thanksgiving, is held in Shillong every April. The Garos celebrate their harvest with the Wangala dance to long drums, and the Nongkrem dance is performed near Smit.
Crafts
Cane and bamboo baskets, Garo and Jaintia weaving and Khasi silver and gold jewellery are made in the hill villages.
