of IowaAn aakash kandil ("sky lantern") is the star- or box-shaped lantern of paper, cloth or bamboo that Maharashtrian families hang outside their homes for Diwali, lit each evening of the festival. Many are still made by hand at home, and markets sell them in the weeks before Diwali.
