Specialties of Himachal Pradesh
Apples
Apples are Himachal Pradesh's main fruit crop and the mainstay of farmers in Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi and Chamba districts. The orchards, started in the hills over a century ago, now grow both old Delicious varieties and newer ones; the fruit is picked from July to October and packed in cartons for markets across India. The state's Department of Horticulture supports growers with planting material and cold storage.
Kangra tea
Tea has been grown in the Kangra valley, below the Dhauladhar range around Palampur and Dharamshala, since the mid-19th century. Kangra's green and black teas are light and delicate, made in small gardens and a few factories.
Help for entrepreneurs and local industries
