Chunchura: History, Geography, Tourism, Map

Located at the bank of river Hooghly, 35 km from Kolkata, Chunchura is one of the oldest cultural hubs of west Bengal. It was founded in 1579 by Portuguese merchants but later occupied by Dutch traders. Later, this strategically located port became a point of attraction of British and several conflicts occurred between Dutch and British troupes. This is the birthplace of many poets, writers, philosophers, politicians of magnanimous repute and also the town took a significant part in independence movement of India.

The statues of Mother Mary of the Diocese church, the Armenian Church, the Dutch cemetery, the Edwardian Clock Tower, Hooghly Imambara are representatives of various empires and cultures that have influenced this region.
