Consumer complaints and right to information

  • Consumer complaints: call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or complain at consumerhelpline.gov.in about a shop, company or service provider; it takes the complaint up with the company first.
  • Consumer commissions: to claim compensation, file a case online on e-Jagriti. Claims up to ₹50 lakh go to the district consumer commission, up to ₹2 crore to the state commission, and above that to the national commission (Department of Consumer Affairs).
  • Right to Information (RTI): anyone can ask a government office for information under the RTI Act, 2005, and must get a reply within 30 days. For central government offices, apply on RTI Online (fee ₹10). For state government offices, use a letter to the office's Public Information Officer, with the state's fee. Appeals go to the office's appellate authority, then the state information commission or the Central Information Commission.
