Raiganj: History, Geography, Tourism, Map Raiganj is the district town of the district of Uttar Dinajpur in West Bengal. It is situated around 425 km from Kolkata and 188 km from the town of Siliguri alongside the NH-34 on the way to North Bengal. The main attraction of this place is its breathtaking wildlife sanctuary rich with migratory birds. Therefore the best time to visit Raiganj is during the months of November to February. The Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary is vast in size and it has the shape of the English alphabet of U. It is located on the bank of River Kulik, so it is at times referred to as the Kulik bird sanctuary. Every winter nearly 150 different bird species arrive here from the north in numbers ranging from 65,000 to 75,000. Some of the common migratory birds seen here are Open-Billed Storks, Asian Open-billed storks, Egrets, Knight Herons, and Cormorants. Indian birds like kites, flycatchers, kingfishers, owls, woodpeckers, drongos, and bee eaters. The sanctuary has artificial network of man made canals which is connected to the River Kulik. During the months of monsoon the flood water from the river enters the plains of the sanctuary. This acts as the important source of food for most of the bird species.
