Medinipur: History, Geography, Tourism, Map

Medinipur is one of the largest districts in West Bengal. Also known as the district of Midnapore, it is the birthplace of some of the leading revolutionaries and martyrs, freedom fighters and social reformers. The list of luminaries includes names like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Matangini Hazra, Hemchandra Kanongo, Khudiram and Prodyat Bhattacharyya.

The district of Medinipur depicts great diversity as far as its topographical features are concerned. Rivers like Subarnarekha, Keleghai, Kangsabati, Dulongs and Silabati flow through the district of Medinipur. Several hillocks dot the landscape of the region.

The town of Medinipur is one of the oldest towns in the state and according to historical accounts it was named by and after one of the tribal chiefs, Mednikar in the 13th century. During the rule of the British East India Company, in 1783, Medinipur was proclaimed as the district headquarter and therefore emerged as one of the administrative centers.

Medinipore has gradually emerged as a popular tourist destination. A visit to the district is incomplete without touring sites like Mohoboni, Pathra, Rupa Ghagra, Jhargram Rajbati, Narajole Rajbari, Tarafereni, Parimal Kanan, Gopegarh Heritage & Nature Eco-Tourism, Hatibari, Banspahari, Kanaisore Pahar, Chandra Eco-Tourism, Chilkigarh, Kanakdurga Mandir, Kankrajhore, Birsingha, Ganganirdhanga, Gurguripal Eco-tourism, Odulchua and Arrahbari.
