Kharagpur: History, Geography, Tourism, Map

Kharagpur is a two-hour train ride from Howrah terminus. The most famous landmark of Kharagpur is the station itself. One of the early railway stations commissioned in India, it was built in 1898 and still stays true to its colonial construction. The platform on Kharagpur is one of the longest in the world. End-to-end, it measures a staggering 1072.5 metres.

From an important trade center during the Mughal era to a bustling business town housing the premier educational institution in the country, Kharagpur has 400 plus years of history behind it. While much of it’s pre-colonial past is not really evident, it is nevertheless and interesting place for a short visit .

The Khargeshwar Shiva Temple lies on the outskirts of the city and lends it its name. Interestingly, this is said to be the place where the legendary Bhima felled the demon Hirimba. The temple itself draws its name from King Kharag Singh Pal who built it.

Much of the town is dominated by the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, one of the premier technical education institutions in the world. It is situated in Hijli, just five kilometers from the station. The institute’s campus is a small town within itself.
