Barddhaman: History, Geography, Tourism, Map

The district of Bardhaman or Burdwan as it is popularly known has been the center of administrative and political activity since the time of the Mughals and subsequently the British. Burdwan’s claim to fame is the fact that it yields huge quantities of rice and is therefore referred to as the “rice plate” of the state. Situated at a distance of approximately 100 kilometers from Kolkata, Bardhaman is easily accessible by various modes of transport.

A visit to the district of Bardhaman is incomplete without a visit to the Curzon Gate. Constructed in 1903, it was built to honor Lord Curzon during the reign of the Burdwan Maharaja Bijoy Chand Mahatab. Competing for the tourist’s attraction with this landmark is the Garden of Rose or the Golap Bag, as it is locally known. The Meghnad Saha Planetarium and the Science Center, located in cloze proximity to the Burdwan University draws large crowds, especially children eager to witness various scientific instruments.

Maithon dam, built on the river Barakar, is a popular tourist destination. Set in the backdrop of lofty hills, the dam and its adjoining areas like Churulia, the Kalyaneswari Temple and the Panchet Dam offer an interesting sightseeing. Bardhaman is also the home to the 108 Shiva Mandirs consecrated to Shiva. These temples were built in 1789 and on orders from Rani Bishnukumari. Other religious shrines in the district include the Konkaleswari Kali Temple and the Shrine of Sarvamangala.
