Ratnagiri is a district in the state of Maharashtra located on the banks of the Arabian Sea. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state. Ratnagiri is a significant portion of the well known Konkan coast famous for its Alphonso mangoes. Ratnagiri offers a number of things to the tourists from temples to exotic beaches. A trip to Ratnagiri will always be memorable. One will surely discover spiritual bliss in this land of rolling waters.

The district lies between 73.3 degree East Longitude and 16.98 degree North Latitude. It experiences a tropical climate with an area of 8,208 square kilometers. It is well connected with the other states by road and rail route. The area is surrounded by the Sahyadri hills on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west.

The district has an elaborate history to boast of. In the 18th century it was under the reign of the Satara kings. It is one of the important ports of the Konkan coast. The district was surrendered to the British army during the 19th century. Ratnagiri was conferred with the status of a district during the year 1960 after the creation of the state of Maharashtra.

Ratnagiri is famous for the exotic beaches, the temples and some beautiful villages. Ganpatipule is one of the spectacular beaches of Ratnagiri offering a visual treat for the tourists. One can find mangrove and coconut plants along the coast. The temple of Lord Ganpati near the beach is visited by numerous tourists every year. Some of the other places of interest are the Marleshwar temple and waterfall, Derwan and Parshuram temple.

There are two villages namely Malgund and Velneshwar that are close by. Both these villages have spectacular beaches and the former is the home of the famous Marathi poet Kavi Kesavsoot. There are temples of Lord Shiva in both these villages visited by devotees each year.
