The second largest city and the district headquarters, Nanded is visited by tourists for its varied places of interest. Earlier popular as Nandigram, the city of Nanded is at a distance of 270 km from Hyderabad and 650 km from Mumbai, the state capital. The city of Nanded is almost at equal distance from the cities of Aurangabad, Solapur and Nagpur.

The city of Nanded is easily accessible via the Aurangabad Airport, which has direct flights to and from Mumbai. The rail station at Nanded is also one of the prominent rail stations of the state connecting the city to the different metropolises of India. The State Transport service runs regular buses to and from Nanded. Once in the city, tourists can take an auto to visit the different places of interest.

The first mention of Nanded appears in the Mahabharata, the great Indian epic. The Nandas were the rulers of the city for a long time. During the 1st century AD, the city developed under the rule of the Andhrabhartya clan. The subsequent rulers of the place were the Chalukyas, the Kakatiyas and the Yadavas. The city fell under the Mughals who made it the capital of the Telangana region.

Known for its interesting history and politics, Nanded is also an important cultural center of Maharashtra. The Takhat Sachkand Shri Hazur Abchalnagar Sahib Gurudwara is the chief attraction of Nanded. It is the site where Guru Govind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru, held his congregation. Muhurgad, in close proximity to the city, is known for the temples dedicated to Renuka Devi, Kalika and so on.

The other places of interest in and around Nanded are Nanded Fort, the twelve Jyotirlingas at Parli Vaijnath, the Unkeshvar hot springs and the Hazrat Nawab Sarfaraz Khan Sahid Masjid.
