The district of Kolhapur occupies the southernmost tip of Maharashtra. Spread across an area of 7685 sq. kms, the heart of the district is Kolhapur City. The entire district is divided into three distinct zones namely the Southern ranges, the Eastern ranges and the Central ranges. Several rivers flow through the district of Kolhapur and the list includes names like Vedganga, Panchaganga, Hiranyakeshi, Warana, Ghataprabha, Bhogavati and Dudhaganga. As it is located along the Panchganga river, it is also referred to as “Dakshin Kashi”.

Since ancient times, Kolhapur has been one of the most popular cities in western India. In the annals of Indian mythology, one finds the mention of Kolhapur as being one amongst the “Shaktipeeths”. The district has witnessed the rule of many dynasties, like the Chalukyas, the Yadavas, the Rashtrakutas and the Silaharas. It was also captured by the great Maratha leader Shivaji at one point of time.

Kolhapur is located at a distance of 395 kms from Mumbai and is linked to the city by a well developed transport system. Buses ply to Kolhapur on a regular basis from adjacent cities like Pune, Panaji, Solapur, Satara, Miraj, Sawantwadi and Sangli. You can also board a train or take a quick flight from Mumbai.

Kolhapur has something or the other to offer to each of its visitors. On the one hand there are several places of historical relevance like the Shalini Palace, the Bhavani Mandap, Panhala and Town Hall while on the other places of natural beauty like Panchganga Ghat, Narsinhwadi, Kotiteertha, Dajipur Sanctuary and Rankala are greatly admired by the tourists. People inclined towards religion can always visit sites like the Kashi Vishveshwar Temple, Khidrapur, Shankaracharya Math and Jotiba. Shopping is an integral part of a trip to Kolhapur and you cannot afford to lose out on an opportunity to buy the famous Kolhapuri footwear. They are a must buy.
