Amravati is a prominent district in the central Indian state of Maharashtra. Area of Amravati is 12, 210 kmē and the population, as per the Census of 2001, is 2,607,160. The major towns of this district are Achalpur, Anjangaon Surji, Dharni, Bandera and Nandgaon Khandeshwar. There are many famous personalities who hail from this district. Some of them are our President Pratibha Patil, Hemant Kanitkar, the cricketer of yester years, social reformers like Gadge Maharaj and Tukdoji Maharaj.

There are many rivers and their tributaries flowing through this district. Some of these rivers and tributaries are:

  • Tapti River and its tributaries Burshi, Surkhi, Tigria, Khandu etc.

  • Purna river and its tributaries Aarna, Pedhi, Chandrabhaga, Bhileshwari etc.

Amravati is a hot tourist destination from natural as well as historic point of view. There are few natural reserves in Amravati. Some of these reserves are:

  • Melghat Tiger Reserve (Project Tiger)

  • Gugarnal National Park

  • Wan Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Chikhaldara Hill Station

People come to Amravati for places of historic importance as well. Gawligarh Fort and Ambadevi temple are such destinations.

Religious people can also find a niche in Amravati as Koudanyapur, situated near Amravati is said to be the birthplace of Rukmini, wife of lord Krishna. Apart from that there are several temples. Some of them are Deonath Math, Ekveera Temple, Vitthal Mandir, Khandeshwar Bhagwana Temple.

Some of the other spots for sight seeing are the dams, Simbhora Dam in Morshi and Shahanur is Anjangaon Surji. HVPM (Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal), a leading institute for sports in India is here in Amravati.
