Ahmednagar

 

Ahmednagar is a city in Maharashtra situated on the bank of the river Sina. It is in the district of Ahmednagar and situated on 120 km northeast of the city of Pune. It comes under the district of Ahmednagar, the largest district of Maharashtra. Ahmednagar is best known for its co-operatives of banks, milk and sugar. It houses more than a dozen sugar mills. It was Ahmednagar which heralded the co-operative movement. Apart from Marathi, English, Hindi and Urdu are also taught in the local schools.

Ahmednagar is 500 years old town founded by and named after Ahmed Nizam Shah. It was built on the relics of Bhingar, another ancient city of Maharashtra. With the broken alliance with Bahmani Sultanate, sultanate of Ahmednagar came into being. In the history of Maharashtra, it is popular as Nizam Shahi dynasty. From Mughals from northern India to Peshwas from Maharashtra, everyone had their share of reign for a minimum span in Ahmednagar. So, this place had enjoyed historical importance for long time. Chand Bibi Palace Chand Bibi palace is the tomb of Salabat Khan, situated thirteen kilometres away from the town of Ahmednagar. Since it is located on a hill-top, tourists get a spectacular city view, especially at night.

Ahmednagar fort This is the main fort of the town erected by Ahmed Nizam Shah.

Renuka Temple Five kms away from both Ahmednagar railway station and bus stand, the exact location of this temple is Kedagaon. Renuka is another name for Goddess Durga who had a fierce fight with Mahishasura, the buffalo demon for nine days and at the end of ninth day, demon was slain.

Alamgir This is the place where Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb had died. There is a mosque, library and a meeting place.
