Face to Face with Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek, the general observation is that Aishwarya Rai seems to look a wee bit older than you do in `Dhai Akshar…` Is that an opinion you agree with?

Abhishek Bachchan: "Not at all. I any case, I think one must see the movie first before drawing any such conclusion. One cannot pass a comment as sweeping as that on the basis of just a few promos. The director must have conviction in his characters, actors and his film. Once that is established then such factors or comments do not really matter".

`Tera Jadoo…` was a love story; and so are `Dhai Akshar…` and `Kuch Na Kaho`. You seem to be specializing in love stories inspite of your `angry eyes` and `action` lineage. You seem to be more cut out for action hero roles. When do we see you doing that?

Abhishek Bachchan: "I think it is up to the audiences and to my directors to decide that. Though personally speaking, I would like to try all genres of films before I can pin myself down to a particular image that is `me` or one that I would like to be tagged with. I cannot bully anyone to do a particular kind of film with me. I can do only the roles that are offered to me. Currently, I am working on a few projects which are action oriented, so lets see how it goes."

It was obviously the work of some miscreants with a jealous axe to grind when your face on some posters of `Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya` was blackened over Juhu. It was appalling. What was your reaction to that act?

Abhishek Bachchan: "I thought it was sick! I don`t know who did it and why they did it. Basically, such acts are very disrespectful to somebody else`s work. It is not in very good taste. We put in a lot of effort and money for the publicity of these films and destroying somebody else`s property is very juvenile. It is very demeaning, both financially and emotionally. It is sad that people have to stoop to this level to prove a point. Whatever it might be."

In this age of cutting edge competition, not many stars attend the premieres or parties of prospective `rival` stars. So it nice to see you all over at the premiere party of Hrithik Roshan`s `Fiza`. It was big-hearted of you.

Abhishek Bachchan: "You seem to forget one thing. My mother was there in the film, very prominently. It was my mother`s film premiere and party. So what`s big hearted about it?"

What did you think of the movie?

Abhishek Bachchan: "I loved the film. I think it is very creditable that a journalist and critic could make such a responsible film. Everybody in the film, be it Manoj Bajpai, Sushmita Sen , Hrithik or Karisma - they were all fantastic in the film. I am glad Hrithik has done this role in `Fiza`. He has broken the myth that he can only do glamorous roles. He has proved that he can act in different kinds of cinema".

Do you watch your father`s films as `reference` points?

Abhishek Bachchan: "I watch all my father`s films. And they turn out as perfect reference points. They are like text books of acting, not only for me but many millions of people for that matter. He has influenced everyone`s style of acting. And that is not an exaggeration."
