Kakinada

Kakinada is a natural harbour and famous for its traditional anchorage port. This small yet beautiful coastal town is just 60 km away from Rajahmundry airport served by Kingfisher Airlines.

Like other coastal towns and ports of India, this town is also developed by European traders. Dutch traders were the first people to step in followed by British merchants and Canadian Baptist Missionaries. In fact, Kakinada grew into prominence since 18th century and only after colonial rulers made this town their administrative headquarter.  Due to its strategic location, the city became one of the leading sea trading centres of eastern coast.

There are number of controversies regarding the origin of this name. According to social historians the name comes from “Kaki Nandiwada”, the old name of the place during the reign of Nandi Kings before arrival of Europeans. British administrators used to call this town as Cocanada. After independence, this new name has been established with a view to keep the flavor of the original name.

Apart from old anchorage port, the city has a deep sea port which is the second largest in the state after Visakhapattanam. Kakinada is famous as a pilgrimage centre. Draksharamam Temple is the chief tourist attraction. Renowned 14th century Telegu poet Srinatha wrote a non-fictional verse named ‘Bhimakhanda’ about this sacred place. Besides a host of other temples are there like Kukkuteswar Temple, Satya Narayan Swamy Temple, Appanapalle Temple etc. There are two wild life sanctuaries – Coringa and Papikonda. The Buddhist centre at Adurru, Rajmundry Bridge and Papikondalu are other places to visit.
