The state takes its name from the Andhra people, the indigenous inhabitants of the area, attributing to the history of Andhra. It is the fourth largest state in India by area, spanning 275,068 km� and fifth largest by population over 75,727,000. It is located on the southeast coast of India, bordered by Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha in the north, the Bay of Bengal in the East, Tamil Nadu in the south and Karnataka in the west. The state is crossed by two major rivers, the Godavari and Krishna. The capital is Hyderabad and state language is Telugu. The state was created in 1956 from the Telugu-speaking portions of Madras and Hyderabad states.
